Wireless network witn no internet sharing

Hello,
I'm doing my first steps in trying to understand how to setup a wireless netwrok: I have 3 machines (2 desktops and one laptop) that I'd like to connect using a wireless network. I don't need and don't want to share Internet connection between them. Only to have them connected so I can share files, printers, etc. What equipment should I get? Is 3 wireless netwrok cards for the machines are enough? Do I need an Access Point? Do I need something that would act like a hub in wired network? What role does Access Point play in a wireless netwrok?
Thanks.

There are two ways to operate a wireless network.
1. Peer-peer.
The PCs talk to each other and can share their resources like files and printers. For this you need only a wireless device for each PC.
2. Infrastructure.
All PCs communicate via the infrastructure and can talk to each other and resources on the network like a router to the internet or a network printer or another network. For this you need a wireless card for each PC and a wireless infrastruture device like an Access Point or wireless router.

Of course you can always expand to option 2 from option 1. The cards for the PCs are the same.
