I can't use port triggering!!!

I have the Netgear WGR614 v6. I use xbox live quite a bit. I heard port triggering is better with xbox live. Every time I select port triggering and type in how long it is on for (i put the highest which is 9999 min) it goes back to port forwarding. How do I stop this?

I can't use port triggering!!!

I have a Netgear WGR614 v6 router and I want to change my NAT to open so I can play with my friends on Xbox Live. It is at strict right now, how do I change it? I've can't seem to find it anywhere on my router settings page.

netgear couldn't tell you how to do it when you called them up and asked them?

I haven't called them because they aren't the most helpful over the phone, but i guess i have no choice. However, if anyone knows exactly how to do it please tell me. I'm new to this networking stuff.

mp11, it looks like your previous thread is basically around the same subject of configuring your network for XBox live Internet access, so the threads have been merged.

Have you consider enabling uPNP on your Netgear, if it is uPNP capable? uPNP is specifically designed to eliminate the need for port forwarding and/or triggering with uPNP enabled devices. Since this is a Microsoft standard and the XBox is also from Microsoft...

I did enable universal plug and play a while ago, and i didnt see any difference.

Also, xbox live recommends that anyones NAT should be open and not strict. I'll call Netgear once I get a chance.

Practically all SOHO routers are "open NAT" which means that it allows all outgoing connections from the "inside" network. The bigger question is how effective/correct is their uPNP implementation, since you are trying to get another Microsoft product to work from inside a NAT network. Microsoft has released an online router test tool to help determine various SOHO/NAT router capabilities/attributes detailed in http://forums.practicallynetworked.c...ead.php?t=8034.

"effective/correct is their uPNP implementation..."

As for your initial post with the port triggering situation, most implementations do not go into the detailed ability to define "open duration", typically "triggering port" and "ports to open" as a resulting response.

So it looks like you may have two issues to cover with Netgear or to see if they have a latter firmware that covers those issues.

In thinking through this a little more...

9999 minutes, if that is minutes instead of seconds or milliseconds, then that would work out to 166.65 hours or just shy of 7 days. That for all intentional purposes is a static port forwarding or "forever" in the computing/telecommunications references of time. Have you tried a more "reasonable" value, say maybe even half that, since people have been known to die after multi-day non-stop game play anyway?

Another possible option is to assign the XBox a static IP and use port forwarding, if those ports are not used by any other application(s) either now or in the foreseeable future.

I have assigned xbox its own port. I also assigned a port for the games i play Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3. Dont worry they are the correct numbers (i checked).

I'll try the cutting the minutes in half like you said. The weird thing is a few months ago port triggering worked for a few days and then it just stopped. I've been having this problem ever since.

P.S. still waiting on a response from netgear.
