2nd Laptop Added - Now 1st Won't Acquire Network Address
I have a home network with an SMC router, 3 wired desktops and a wireless laptop. Just got my son a laptop for graduation. No problem with setup, including WPA - he was able to connect to the network fairly quickly. However, whenever the new laptop is connected, my laptop won't acquire a network address. Network connection Repair doesn't fix it. The only way to connect the old one is to turn off the new one.
The new laptop never has a problem connecting, even when the old one is connected.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Any chance the routers built-in DHCP server is only configured for four (4) IP addresses? Log into the router to see.
You also may need to simply reset the router...

I believe the number of IP addresses is limited by the range of the IP address pool, correct? My range is 192.168.2.100 - 192.1682.199, so I think that shouldn't be an issue.
I can reset the router and sometimes I can connect, but on subsequent boots while the new laptop is logged in, I have the same problem.
I'm wondering - could it be a problem with my older laptop - that with 5 other devices connected (I forgot about the X-BOX that's also connected), it's wireless adapter is too "weak" to attach to my router?
Anything else to check?
Thanks,
Pete

Strange problem.
The SMC is configured to use wireless encryption - what type ? WPA only or WPA/WEP.
Is your old laptop configured for WPA or WEP? Ensure it is WPA.

Still having the same problem, but with one correction. The new laptop also has difficulty acquiring a network address when the old laptop is up and running.
The problem is somewhat sporadic. I mean it happens most of the time, but sometimes it does not.
I'm using WPA, and I tried a number of different channels, but to no avail.

You should probably verify your allotted DHCP assignment range on your router and maybe troubleshoot with the wireless encryption disabled.

MAC Cloning is usually on the WAN side, if there is a duplicate MAC conflict, both devices will not work on the same network.
