Angry Having Trouble Setting Up Router And Connection. Please Help!!! Newbie!

ok, here is the deal...

i set up the LinkSys Wireless Access Point router at my friends apartment which is just about right next to me. His computer is not working but the router is...we plugged it into the modem and seems is working fine.
I then installed the Wireless USB Adapter into my and seems that the connection is fine. It finds and and says that the connection is fine. So looks like everything is working.
Now here is the problem, I can't get connected to the net. It somehow doesn't recognize that there is a connection. Dial-Up still works fine but I just can't get connected to DSL. Now do I need something like WinPoet? If so, then I did install it but it just does not connect. It gives me an error (Error 629: The port was disconnected by the remote machine) I don't know if that helps or not.

Anyway, can anybody PLEASE help me? Now is it because it is not set up to his computer? Just plugged into the modem? If it is that, the reason we tried this is because somebody told us that it would still work without a computer hooked up to the access point. Ok, any help would me great! Thanks in advance

Well, I don't myself use DSL, but this is how I understand your problem.

You are using DSL with PPPoE. If you plugged your PC into the DSL modem you would need Winpoet or similar to provide the PPPoE. However, connecting via the router you don't use Winpoet. The Linksys router has PPPoE in it. You have to configure the router to use PPPoE and enter the ISP username and password in the router (see page 4-6 of the befw11s4 manual).

Also set your IE connection properties to never dial a connection and automatically detect network settings.

If that doesn't do it some more investigation will be needed.

ok, what about this. Let me make it more clear...

The DSL connection is at my friends house. His computer is down, so ONLY the wireless access point router is hooked up to the DSL connection. From there I came to my house (we live in the same building) and connected the wireless USB adapter to my computer. Now it says the Signal Strength and Link Quality is good...so there is a connection. BUT....I don't get the speed on my comp. It just doesn't work. It doesn't connect to the internet. I can only connect with my dial up modem. Now is it because he doesn't have his computer set up? But then again, I heard you can still network with the access point, u dont need it to be set up on a computer. I hope this clears it up

Yes, what you describe is already what I understood you were trying to do. You don't need his PC running.

My previous suggestions still apply.
