Post Linksys wap11 firmware upgrade - win9x only

I just wanted to share my experience with trying to update the firmware in a Linksys Wap11 V 2.2.

This process would not work from an NT server--ran for a while and then died with various messages--checksum error.

From an XP workstation, I got no response at all to clicking on the upgrade command.

I finally moved the code to a 9.x machine (actuall, a network share on that same NT server accessed via a 9.x workstation, and the upgrade went through fine.

I'm not sure what to recommend to those hapless souls trying to use this at home with only XP, NT, or Windows 2000.

I'm glad I found your posting...

I was having trouble upgrading the firmware of my WAP11 v2.2 also from my Win2000 based notebook PC.

After seeing your post, I went to my Win98SE based desktop PC and initiated the upgrade from there. At first, I did not see "success". After I woke up the next day, I noticed the new firmware version number for the WAP11.

I'm still not having success linking to the WAP11 with the SSID broadcasting disabled, which is the original reason for me wanting to upgrade the firmware (based on another posting that I read elsewhere).

This wireless stuff is still not of the plug-and-play variety...Sigh...

I'm currently on the latest firmware from their site. However, with this firmware my stations cannot communicate with SSID broadcast turned off, so I've turned that back on.

They had been able to communicate in that condition with the older firmware, but I'm not terribly worried about security. I would like them to get this stuff right sometime, though!

I've got one XP Pro with a Lucent Gold card, and one WinMe with a Compaq PCI card talking to the WAP11.

In this home situation, (this is actually a different Wap11 than my first post was about)--I've been able to flash from XP Pro just fine.
