Netgear Mr814 Problems With Macintosh Networks

I'm running a brand new Netgear Wireless Router MR814 with a G4 Tower , a Powerbook G4 w/ Airport card and a laserprinter. (Both systems are running OS9.2.2)

When connecting computers through ethernet cables I can share files, access the net simultaneously and print from either computer.

When I decide to use the Powerbook via wireless instead I run into problems. Basically I can still access the internet however I can no longer access anything else on the network. I lose my printer along with the other G4 on the network.

I have contacted Netgear regarding this matter and they said they do not support macintosh despite item clearly indicating that it is MacOS compatible.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It appears that the router has some incompatiblities with Apple Talk.

HELP.

It looks like we have the same problem. I do have the same Netgear MR814. I have not tried to use the laptop on Cat5, but on wireless I can not map anything. I can ping now each other even by name, but I can not shear anything.

This is because the MR814 does not retransmit Appletalk packets in the wireless mode. It will retransmit Appletalk for the wired ports.

This will explain why the PowerMac can see the printer but the powerbook can't.

I'm not sure if there is any recourse to this problem. I compared the MR814 to the slightly older MR314 and decided to purchase the MR314 instead. This model retransmits appletalk packets wirelessly also.

I have a dual MDD G4, ibook (wireless) and a brother MFC printer with a brother network card installed. The ibook can print wirelessly (using appletalk to find the printer on the network) and the G4 prints through the wired network.

I would recommend trading in your MR814 for the older model.

Thanks for your reply.

I managed a work around to keep the MR814. My Laserwriter 640/12 PS supports TCP/IP printing so I can print to it via wireless from my TiBook. TCP/IP also enables me to fileshare to my desktop G4 via wireless also.

I just assumed that since the MR814 was the upgrade to the MR314 it supported wired and wireless Appletalk.

I was wrong.
