TCP not loading

4 computers (3 Win 98 SE; 1 XP Home) with Linksys WUSB11 ver 2.6 connecting to a Linksys BEFW11S4 ver 2.
One of the Win 98's and the XP connect correctly.
Two of the Win 98 SE's do not load the TCP stack after being shut off over night (not mine so don't suggest they be left on)
The computers are started in the morning - they find the USB and the config utility show a good connection to the router - but they have no Internet connection. IPCONFIG is all zero's.
Control Panel - Network shows the USB adapter along with an AOL adapter (installed for their modem) - but TCP is installed for AOL only, not for the USB adapter - go to add - protocol - MS - TCP and reinstall TCP and reboot and now TCP is loaded and the Internet connection is good.

Not sure if this is a Linksys or MS problem. Have checked MS Knowledge base for articles about TCP not loading and Linksys also. I emailed Linksys but have not received a reply.
Anyone one have problems with TCP stacks loading and have any suggestions?

windows 98 has a tendancy to get TCP/IP settings and protocols all screwed up. Try uninstalling all the protocols and services on the 98 machine and then rebooting and after the reboot then reinstall them again.

Also try setting up the NIC cards to use a STATIC IP instead of a dynamic IP.

Thanks for the suggestion - and I did try that - when TCP does not load - the static address is not loaded either.
Static or DHCP - no TCP - no address.

did you try removing and then adding the protocols also?

Several times - removed the software and the usb device - if you re-install TCP it will work until after you turn the computer off - and not everytime - about half the time when you restart TCP does not load for the USB - yet does for AOL and at other times it is fine.
I found a knowledge base article about AOL loading some of the tcp files in the Windows folder instead of Windows/System and how this can cause network problems - thought I had it - not the case the files are where they belong.
I don't know if it is a problem with the USB, windows 98SE or the fact that they have used AOL in the past.
I am tempted to uninstall the USB adapter and AOL both, then reinstall the adapter first and then AOL - I am not sure about being able to save their address book and email so that I can recover them for the reinstall of AOL -anyone know how to do this - or even if you can? I don't use AOL and don't know what the files are named. Can I just save the whole AOL folder - maybe under a different name and restore from there?

So - why does TCP fail to load half the time?

sounds like its another program that you have installed on both of those computers, it probably is aol. I remember when i used to use AOL it used to mess up the TCP ip stack every now and then, but not that often. Try using a different version of AOL, but before u install a different version, remover the TCP/IP stack again.

What about the mail and address book? Is there a way to save these for a re-install?
Currently one of the computers is using ver 6 and the other is using version 7 - so a straight upgrade will not help.
I will uninstall and reinstall if I can figure out how to save the above items.Thanks,

yes there is a way to save it, but i forgot how, its been years since i used aol. Somewhere in aol's keyword or help it should tell you how to save it, or you can always call up AOL even though their tech support sucks. If you want you can probably try starting a new post just on that topic, hehe.
