Can't connect to Internet through router

This is my first post here, so... hi everyone! *wave*

My problem is as follows: When I connect the Internet cable directly to my desktop computer, I can access the Internet fine, no problems. However, when I try to connect a wireless router, the Internet connection is mysteriously lost. I tried switching routers and that didn't work, so it has to be something about the networking. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to troubleshoot a wireless network, so I came here.

Relevant information:
I am running a Gateway PC with Windows ME (I would blame the whole thing on the crappy OS that is ME, but it's been working fine up until two days ago).
I have cable Internet access through a modem. When I connect the modem to the router, the modem acts as normal, it's just that the router doesn't detect an Internet connection.
As I said earlier, the wireless network was working fine two days ago, so I doubt that there is a problem with the computer or the equipment.

First of all, WinMe, for all its faults, networks just like any other OS. That's not likely the problem.

How are you able to conclude that your "router doesn't detect and Internet connection?" Are you able to access the router from your desktop PC?

What wireless network are we talking about? You've described only a wired setup with a cable modem and a router, along with your desktop PC. What sort of wireless network "was working fine two days ago?" Do you have a wireless network adapter installed on the desktop? Are there other PCs involved?

If you're trying to introduce a router into your network/internet system, the cable modem must be connected to the WAN port on the router. Have you done this? Checked this?

Please provide more info, and we'll be happy to help!
