i have a server computer i picked from our head office, when i insert the cable into the nic card, theres no connection and when i insert it into the modem slot it works, what cud be wrong, how can i work on it, i get replies from loop back address 127.0.0.1 meaning its working fine

Your best bet is to contact your internal corporate IT for proper support. Your company may have specific security policies and corresponding settings that needs to be followed.

Cat 5/6 cable generally won't fit into a modem Are you sure it isn't a second nic?

More than likely, the modem in this case is probably a high speed cable or DSL modem (where both are really bridges as neither really "modulate" anything).
