I have an old eTec wired adsl router/modem no longer being used.

I have just run a network cable from my main wireless adsl router modem to my kitchen 30 metres away. I now want to connect two devices (a laptop and a streaming audio device) to the network. I will only use one of the devices at a time, so can I make some use of my old eTec wired router/modem as some kind of splitter or hub ?

Thanks for any input.

...OK, so I have answered my own question by just plugging the two devices and the new network cable from my main adsl router/modem into three ports of the old eTec adsl router modem and it works.

However, if I switch both devices on, the secondd one gets assigned an IP address of 10.0.0.1 and is not visible elsewhere on the network. Is there a way around this please? How do I get it assigned an address in the 192.168... range?

It sounds like you have wired your second unit as a switch only, which is an unsupported configuration with most manufacturers (otherwise their documentation would detail that physical hook-up). Your best bet is to verify with the manufacturer of the second device, who would also be the source of configuration information.

There are folks who have mis-configured their devices in a similar fashion. The DHCP is turned off on the second device and it functions strictly as a simple unmanaged switch in that case - no further configuration required.
