Hi,

Hope this is the correct place for this enquiry. Late last year there was a law passed in the UK that requires ISPs to retain internet usage logs that could be handed over to the security services if so requested.

Presently I am spec'ing up a network for the owner of a building in which there are several organisations. Most of the organisations require an internet connection so I will probably be using a router and a managed switch, (VLANs).

However a network manager at a University near me has told me that as a result of this new law I should be setting up a system to record internet usage for the organisations using the connections in the building. I also note that after reading several web forums on the subject I could be leaving myself open to legal challenges for "invasion of privacy".

So basically I would like to know which way to jump on this one. Does the new law apply to my specific case, ie setting up a network for someone who is providing a connection for several other organisations or does the legal responsibility lie with the ISP who is providing that connection to the owner of the building?

I'm confused

Is there anyone out there who can put me straight on this?

Regards,

Neil Harland

The forums here are geared at basic SOHO networking. What you have described is beyond any SOHO network.

None the less, businesses generally post disclaimers regarding the ownership and monitoring of assets. That can address issues of privacy, even though you referred to ISPs being required to keep logs, which may not cover non-ISPs.

Your better bet is to seek real legal interpretation and advice, versus no-holds bar lip service in matters like this when it concerns legal compliance.
