Problems With Vista Wireless Client

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to a Comcast cable modem with a mixture of five Mac and PC clients connected wirelessly that connect to the AEBS and the Internet with no problem.

I purchased a new HP desktop computer for one of my sons that contains a Wireless N PCI Express card and is running Windows Vista Home Premium. I can connect the HP desktop to my wireless LAN just fine with excellent signal strength but it will not get to the Internet. The wireless status on the HP shows "Access: Local" instead of "Access: Local and Internet." It also shows "IPv4 Connectivity: Local."

Although it's set to obtain DHCP addresses automatically, it doesn't. The gateway IP shows 0.0.0.0 instead of the address of my Airport Extreme. Oddly enough, the Wireless N card also shows a strange IP address that I can't figure out how to change or where it came from: 169.254.143.243.

I tried connecting the HP desktop directly to the Airport Extreme Base Station via an Ethernet cable and it conntects to the Internet just fine.

HP is sending me a replacement Wireless N card, but I can't help thinking the card is not the problem and that I may be missing something. Any ideas?

This problem has been solved and I wanted to report back on how it was done. I ordered a D-Link Wireless N PCI Express card to replace the Wireless N card that HP shipped in the machine as well as the extra one they shipped later. I suspected there were Vista driver issues with the HP card, and I was right. The new D-Link card after installed worked perfectly - great signal strength plus local and Internet access.

Driver or "N" mismatch/incompatibility (as it is still not standardized and riddled with manufacturer variations)... Thank you for sharing your resolution!
