I had to purchase a new dsl modem. I am using a linksys wireless router.

I had a big problem with my desktop so I had to reformt the hard drive. (done before, with no problems).

This time, after doing so, I am no longer able to connect to my wireless router.

Apparently I have a nat box (not familiar with).

My dns server is now 10.202.46.x

The dns server is not what it was before the reformat. Also, my node type is hybrid, which before the reformat it was unknown.

From what I have read, the dns server listed above is for a lan.

I hope someone can understand what I am talking about. I am not sure what type of ino is needed to help me.

I have tried turning off firewalls to try to connect. The wirless computer states, limeted or no connectivity...

Any help would be most appreciated.

Also, I am trying to download something, which means I need to open a port. I have gone into the linksys and added the information but still, am unable to do so. I have the desk top set up to obtain ip address automatically (if you need that info)...

Again, thank you for your help in advance and please let me know if you need more information as I am not sure what info to provide...

As for opening ports, in most cases that is only needed when running a server within your network to be accessible from the Internet. What is the actual application that requires the ports to be opened? The correct configuration requirements should be stated with the application, if it indeed needs additional configuration.

I am not so concerned with opening the port to download.

My major concern is not being able to connect to my wireless. Again, it states limited or no connectivity.

Also, on the desk top I have a new network adapter that was not there before the reformat. It is called Symantec Network Security miniport # 2.

I have tried uninstalling this item and the system will not allow it. I turned it off, but still can't get on my network.

I am set up exactly the way I was before the reformt except I installed xp sp3. Could the sp3 be the cause of all the problems?

My wirless connection, is set up to only allow certain mac addresses, I have verified, double, triple checked and found to be correct.

I removed the option, even removed the security so ANY one can access the router to get on line and set it to broad cast.

Makes no sense....

Any ideas? Remove sp3?

By the way, can't find where that Symantec Network Security miniport # 2 acame from. Even asked Symantec, no response..

Some firewall products will require additional, not normally documented, procedures when the network configuration is changed. It should not be an issue, if you wiped the hard drive and started from a completely "clean slate" installation. It might be the situation, if an "upgrade" installation was performed onto an existing installation.

Right now, the firewall software is the probable suspect. You might try uninstalling it altogether for the purpose of troubleshooting basic wireless connectivity first.

This is probably not a networking issue based upon what you have described as your network troubleshooting steps thus far. It's probably a software, driver or OS configuration issue at this point.

I have a feeling it is the xp sp3 upgrade.

Do you have any thoughts on the mysterious network adapter? Symantec Network Security miniport # 2. It just popped up. Searched the internet only found one person who mentioned it but it was not helpful...

Have you tried uninstalling the Symantec software as suggested in the 4th posting of this thread? You might try that before uninstalling SP3, there may be a chance of software compatibility issues between the two. Nothing to do with networking...
