I have just moved to Germany and the DSL setup is causing me a headache.

Current setup

ALICE DSL in germany, Siemens SL2-141-I Modem/Wireless "router".

The router is configured (by provider) with specific settings to stop multiple PC access at the same time. DHCP turned off. Static IP address must be assigned to PC's in order to coneect to Router by cable or wireless. Once connected to router the DSL conection must be made with username password using windows XP "dial".

This set up causes more problems that it is worth. The only connection which works without fail is via cable to router and to "dial" DSL connect each time from Windows XP. The first time I tried with wireless and just established the connection to the router by this method instead of the cable, WinXP was able to dial the connection to the internet and it worked for 30mins, now I can't even get this to work. When connected to the router by wireless it shows packets being sent, but 0 recieved? so now windows cannot dial a connection over PPPoE if connected wirelessly.

Proposal: To forget the wireless aspect of the rubbish Siemens SL2-141-I and just use it as a modem. Is this possible? I would then like to buy a wireless router and configure this to "dial" the PPPoE connection (through the siemes modem) with the same username and password as Windows XP would do.

This new router can then keep the DSL connection alive and just dish out the internet to any PCs via DHCP addresses assigned from this new router?

Is this possible?

P.s. I have set many wireless routers up in the UK and understand about connecting to the config pages of the router: 192.168.0.1 etc.. but for the life of me I can't connect to this siemens box's config pages. I don't know what Alice do to them. I have tried via cable too with a static IP address assigned, even when I can access the internet using the set-up through the Siemens box I still can't get into the config page.

Also Alice mess with the settings so I don't thinkI can just buy a new (good)DSL Modem Router to replace this box. I would not know the settings for this.

Thanks, Hope someone understands this..

Based upon your description, your request amounts to seeking assistance in violating point 10 of the AUP - http://www.jupitermedia.com/corporate/privacy/aup.html.

I disagree

Although the hardware (modem/router) configuration and the way it works only permits one connection due to the method of "dialing", it is not in the contract that I cannot share this connection between more that one computer / device.. I am posting here because I cannot resolve this issue with the provider as I do not speak German. I also want to use a wireless VOIP phone which is allowed but because of the particular method my router has been configured it is not possible.

Also, wanting to gain wireless access: this is something which I pay extra for *hence I have the wireless router from the provider) which is not working correctly. Me wanting to get this working again is not asking for more than I should already be getting.

Again, I have tried to sort this out with my provider but they do not speak English.

If it is ISP provided equipment and they have not exposed the settings, then any access information other then directly from the ISP is running the strong possibly of countering their AUP. Having language challenges do not change that situation, otherwise anyone not speaking the local language can drive any way they please - the logic probably does not hold up against actual laws that it may lead to violating.

A quick search across the Internet seems to indicate your ISP as one that goes out of its way to obscure their services, so it may not be a language barrier, it may actually a horrible ISP.

I have sorted this issue now anyway.

Yes they are a horrible ISP.
