Hi all.
I am real new to computers and I don't know a thing about networks. I am trying to network two computers one win2000 the other win98. I have installed an adaptor in each PC and linked them to a router. Now I don't know ware to go! How do I set up the network so I can share a broadband internet connection, files and hardware? I have read windows help and the guides here but I still don't know what to do! Could anyone walk through with me how to share files/hardware please? Or have I missed a guide on this site?
Thanks
Ric

Hi,

You didn't state which router you are using. However, if it is a Linsksys BEFSR41 (other routers follow the same procedure) then do the following.

1. Open your browser and type http://192.168.1.1 in the browser address box. Different router have different addresses.

2. In the password box type admin, leave user blank

3. If you are connected to a DSL line type your User name (for example candy1234@verizon.net and then your password. Click apply and then continue.

4. Select DHCp tap

5. Choose Enable from the DHCP Server field. Click Apply and then continue.

6. Go to start, select Settings, and then Control Panel.

7. Double-click the Network icon.

8. Select TCP/IP protocal line.

9. Click the Properties button, then find IP Address tab. Select Obtain an IP address automatically. Press OK.

10. Click OK. You may be asked for original Windows Installation disk. (only is you added or deleted a protocal)

11. Restart computer.

12. If you use Internet Explorer. Go to Tools. Then Internet Options. Find Connection tab. Click it. Go to Lan Settings. Select automatically Detect Settings.

13. Click OK to exit from Connection. Close Internet Explorer. You don't need to reboot. Open Internet Explorer. Enjoy. :D
