Our house is served by a Netgear cable modem/gateway/router, which is hardwired to the landlord's computer and gives me WiFi-G.

I forwarded port 50000 (start range at 50000, end range at 50000) to my IP address, and with the landlord watching, unfortunately demonstrated a direct relationship between the forwarding setting and his computer not getting web pages. This was done on, off, on, and off again. When the port was forwarded, he couldn't get CNN.com.

Does anyone have any kind of explanation for this? It's like I'm in some bizarro world.

There may be a remote chance that cnn.com includes an application running on port 50000.
