Hi all,

I am having problems trying to connect to a Belkin Broadband Voice Modem/Router - wireless 4 port (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=247049) using my existing wireless PCI adapter, which is a D-Link DWL 520+ running 802.11b (a few years old now). The router itself is behind a wall, approximately 1.5 metres away. Using Windows XP's inbuilt WiFi configuration, I removed all preferred networks and allowed for it to detect the router. It manages to pick up the signal (WLAN in this case), but there is ZERO signal strength?! When clicking on connect, it returns an error stating something along the lines of the network no longer being in range, which is expected. However, if I manually input the SSID (WLAN) into the preferred networks, the D-link adapter once again picks up the router's signal, this time with 100% signal strength!? BUT this time when I click on connect, it goes through the process of trying to connect, and after about 15-30 seconds, the 'trying to connect' dialog box disappears and nothing happens.

When I go into the 'cmd' interface and type in /ipconfig, it returns with a message that says 'media disconnected'. I am also unable to communicate through to the router's interface (10.1.1.1) from my browser. I have tried disabling all encryption protocols, MAC filtering etc. and it still does nothing. There IS a pass phrase to access the signal though, which is 'Abcde1234' i.e. a five letter word (beginning with a capital) followed by 4 numbers. I believe this is a WPA-PSK type encryption?

I have downloaded the latest driver for the adapter (v3.07) but when I try to update the driver I am told that my existing driver is already sufficient/latest. I have just downloaded the WPA supplicant from the D-Link website and will try it when I get home in a last ditch effort to try and get it working.

A suggestion has already been made by the Belkin 'support' people that I should just use a direct Ethernet cable to connect to the router. Unfortunately, I do not have an ethernet card or else I would have already done so!

There are two other computers in the house who have no problems picking up the signal and accessing the internet. One is a Mac and the other a PC laptop. Our ISP is iiNet.

If anyone can help me figure out what the problem is that would be fantastic.

Cheers! :)

Hey

I'm not sure how much this is going to help, in fact i'm pretty sure it aint although i felt it worth saying.

In my experience, DLink are not the most third-party-friendly company. Therefore, i believe it may be the case that your DLink card doesn't support the Belkin router, since i swear by Belkin and could'nt concieve of them not supporting a third-party piece of hardware lol.

So my wise advice is to phone DLink and ask if they support the Belkin. Furthermore, i wouldn't recommend holding your breath trying to get in contact with DLink, as i have made many phone calls and yet to speak to a human, or to hear half deccent music for that matter. But oh well, who knows? Maybe i'm just unlucky when it comes to getting in contact with that company or having much success with any of their hardware.

Sounds like it may be an IP address conflict(Maybe)... not being able to access the Routers Page(On which computer doe's it do this on, just the one?) can all the other PC's connect to the routers interface?..try a ipconfig /release and then an ipconfig /renew if you already haven't.

Also make sure the Belkin router is configured in a mixed 802.11b/g mode versus an 802.11g only mode. If its in an 802.11g only mode you will never connect with your client. Check the users manual page 36 for help with that...

You also need to know the exact type of encryption (ie. WPA2/WPA or WEP) and the key. If you don't have your client and router configured the same you will never connect.

Are you sure the D-Link card can do WPA?
