I have not been able to get my home network to work and i have had the same issure for the last two weeks and it seems that no knows why so maybe the brains at this site can

Here is the set up:

DSL connection connected to a router with two computers:
1) Desktop running windows 2000 pro connected directly to the router
2)Laptop running windows xp home connected wirelessly to the router

Here is what works:
1)I am able to get connected to the internet on both machines no problem...the speed on both machines are very good
2)From the desktop i am able to access the laptop's files no problem, but its slow

Here is the problem:
I can not access the files of the desktop, when i do i get an error stating that i dont have access and logon failure (see image below for complete error message *\\Dell -Dell is the name of the desktop computer* when i first started it use to prompt me for a user name and pass but not it just goes straight to this error when i click on the desktop icon from Network places --> workgroups around me-->Dell

Here is my selected options, it is the same for both the desktop and the laptop excluding the noted execptions:

here is some more information under Local Area connections Properities i have in this order

Clients for Microsoft Networks
with windows Locator set as the name service provider

OsS Packet Scheduler

File and Printer Sharing for Micorsoft Networks

NwLink NetBIOS

NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatibile Transport Protocol
i have all zeros in the inernal network number
and auto detect as frame type

Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
i have obtain an ip address and DNS automatically selected
Advance:
IP Setting:
DHCP Enabled is listed
Interface metric:1
DNS:
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes
Append parent suffixes or the primary DNS suffix
Register this connextion's addresses in DNS
all of the above are checked
WINS:
disabled LMHOTS lookup
Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP
are checked
Options:
Ip Security
TCP/IP filtering
are listed

the laptop and the desktop are the same execpt that the interface metric number for the laptop is set to automatic metric and in the options tab under TCP/IP only TCP/IP filtering is available

i know this is a bit extreme but im running out of options

Im afraid that i have listened to to many peoples suggestions and confused the hell out of the 2 computers (including myself)
so please help...!

I don't have WIN2K pro so not sure if I can help.

From your described setup things look good. And since you have internet access and are able to access the laptop's files then there are no basic comms problems. (Though you do not need the NWlink components and can uninstall them - it doesn't matter if you leave them). Also all the metrics should be set to auto.

I have heard of your error before. If it was anything but WIN2K giving that error I would guess you do not have a network share defined on the PC, but I suspect you do have, but check anyway. I have heard that to access a WIN2K share you need to use the same logon user name and password as on the WIN2K PC. You might try making a new logon admin user on the XP system and see what happens when you use it.

There is a similar error here for NT that may also apply to WIN2K - again is seems related to user accounts on both PCs.

I guess we have not checked workgroups. Are both PCs in the same workgroup ?

It is under START -> Highlight My Computer, right cick -> Properties -> Computer Name TAB shows the workgroup.
Make them the same on both PCs.

Or if you cannot change the WIN2K workgroup then you have to login from XP with userid = workgroup\username

For starters delete the NWLink protocols. These are only needed if you are running on a Novel network.

Make both machines have identical user accounts and passwords. Check the permisions on the faolder to make sure the user account has access rights to that folder.

Hmmm....strange.

I'm sitting here with the same setup using a wireless XP Home computer and a wired XP Pro computer and its no problem to share files. All your settings look fine. I have to conclude its something to do with the security permissions on your W2K PC but I don't use W2K so I don't know how to help further.
