I just got a Linksys WRTSL54GS "Media Storage Link Router" and the highest signal i consistently get is around 55% . I've tried from everywhere in my apartment (5 feet from router, 50-55%) (20 feet from router no walls, 50%) (20 feet through 1 wall 45-55%), (40? feet through 2 walls 35%). Maybe 2 times i got a 100% signal but it doesn't last. Also, when i scan for networks my network shows excellent signal but once i connect it drops down.

I had a gorilla router and got good signals but returned it to get this one so i can attach my external hard drive to the router. (but it turns out that feature doesnt even work with vista yet).

I get signals from my neighbor (i don't know how far away) that ranges from 85-100%
My PS3 (around 10-15 feet away) gets 100% signal. thats what it showed during the initial setup but i can't double check it because its doing a system update. (if it turns out to be different i'll post it on here)

Is this fixable?
Should i just return this thing and get a new one? (if i bought it in a store i'd return it in a heartbeat but i got it from newegg so i have to mail it)
If i did return it, is there a different way to connect an external HD to a router? This looked like the only affordable one with that feature built in.

thanks in advance

Update: I confirmed the PS3 signal - 100%
I talked with linksys, they said this is a new issue and they're forwarding it to their engineers. I'm guessing this is somehow a Vista issue, thats why the USB port for external harddrive doesn't work.
I'm still open for your idea's, but i'll keep updating this thread with anything i find out.

If there is something not working its the Storage Link Router.
Send it back for a refund.

I think you may be expecting too much to combine a good wireless router with a network storage funtion. I would choose the router for its routing and wireless features and separately choose/make a NAS store.

I have to say Wireless-G Media Storage Link Router with SpeedBooster - is almost a contradiction in terms. Wireless G and media streaming are not a good combination.

If you want to store media and transmit over wireless then ideally choose an 802.11 dual band bg/a device and use 802.11a for media streaming. And use same on the PCs accessing it. And if the devices have any type of 'speedbooster' feature ensure your router and wireless adapters are by the same manufacturer to ensure compatibility.

The D-Link Dual Band Draft 802.11n Wireless Router (DIR-855) is looking a good prospect as a core home network device.

The D-Link Xtreme N™ Gigabit Router (DIR-655) would also be a good choice (shame it is only 11bg) and is certified Vista compatible.
