This is SO frustrating.

I've got one 128 kb cable connection, a D-Link DI-604 router (configured as a DHCP server), and three computers (2 desktops and a laptop all running Win'98se).

I'm using wires and have succesfully networked the 2 desktops (everything works fine). But, when I go to connect the laptop using the same CAT-5 cables I had successfully used before - when I had a simple hub (instead of router) connecting the LAN - the rest of the Network seems to screw up.

I connected the laptop's PC 10/100 LAN card to the network cable, booted it, and not only does it not show up in Network neighborhood, but all of the sudden the 2 desktop PC's don't recongnize each other. Oddly enough, the laptop showed up in "Network Neighborhood" on the desktops for about 1 minute, but I only got error messages when attempting to connect to it... and this happened time and time again. Nothing seems to work until I disconnect the laptop (then the two desktops see each other and communicate fine).

I spent and hour trying different configurations to no avail (I'm using TCP/IP). And it's not the cable, because I connected the laptop to one of the desktop's cables and it still didn't work.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Its a strange problem and hard to think what could be causing this from the laptop.

Possibilities (guesses) - on the laptop.
- Some sharing software on the laptop e.g. Sygate or wingate or even ICS.
- A manual IP setting conflicting with the desktops.
- Conflict of computer names.

What happens if you connect only the laptop to the router - do you get a DHCP IP address allocated and internet access working? Can you ping the router?
Try winipcfg and post the output here.

Hi I am new to this forum...
I had the same problem with my laptop, I found that the card for the laptop had a bad "dongle." I got a card that is all in one and did not have the problem again.
Until I got the card I did a DCC or Direct Computer Connect which takes just a few adjustments in the computer settings.
