I have SBC DSL (now AT&T) with two Dell computers running XP - a desktop and laptop ... a D-Link 713P router (old but it works) ... and the DSL modem is a SpeedStream 5100.

If I plug the modem directly into any computer it works and I can get online (tried my laptop and my desktop).

If I plug the modem into the router and turn the router on I can log into the admin console of the router and configure it, but it will not pick up the IP address from the modem no matter how many renews I do.

Tried the ipconfig, release, renew, power cycle, resetting router to default, configuring to both 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, cloneing the MAC address in the router console, upgrading firmware of router, and nothing is working at all.

Called AT&T tech support and they basically said since it works when plugged directly in that is all the support they can give. Support is no longer offered from D-Link.

This all started when I unplugged my modem when I was away for a couple weeks. Came back and could not get the router and modem to talk to each other.

Any tips?

There seem two versions of the modem.
One version has built in PPPoE and is called the 'b' version. The 'a' version has 4 LED's and no built in PPPoE.

If you enter your ISP ID and p/w into the modem then you have the 'b' version. PPPoE is performed in the modem. In this case you connect a PC or the router and thats all.

If you have the 'a' version then you enter your ISP ID and p/w into the PC and PPPoE is performed in XP, similarly when connecting the router you enable PPPoE in the router and enter your ISP ID and p/w inot the router.
