Hi there,
I have a Wireless Network and it all works fine with a couple of laptops.

Now I want to add another computer to the same network, but this computer has no access card.

I would like to use a spare router (Belkin F5D6231-4) and operate it as access point. Is that a feasible idea.

I was able to configure the router as an access point and if I do so I can set the channel and the SSID and I can access the access-point's IP and also the PC connected to it (with one of the laptops), if I connect to this network.

Now how do I make this access point connect to the rest of the network that is already set up. Shouldn't setting the channel and the SSID (ABCD = the SSID of the other running WIFI net) do the trick? I also configured all IP addresses (the one of the access point as well as the one of the new computer) to be in the same IP subnet.

Also, I have discovered that the documentation on this Belkin router says I need to connect to the WAN port after I have configured it as an access point. However, that seems to be dead. Instead I can ping and connect if I use one of the router port. The WAN port also needs even a cross over cable to get a link indicator (no auto detection here).

Any help very much appreciated.

You already did it. What's the problem?

The issue is the following:

Network A (existing) has a bunch of hard wired PCs and a WiFi router and some laptops connected to it.

Now I'd like to add a new PC with the Belkin as an access point, because I can't string a wire to the location where this is at.

What I was able to do is to build a small network (network B) consistent of three nodes, the new PC, the belkin configured as access point and a laptop, connecting to the belkin access point. I was able to ping between the three nodes. But that is an island that has no connection to the Internet, so it is useless.

What I want to do is essentially to use the belkin access point like a client card and join the existing network. And that is where I fail. With the usual laptops you have a software that shows me the different networks available and connects to them. However, how do I tell the Belkin (as access point) which network to join. I set the SSID to the same, but this did not do the trick. Any other ideas?
