I have an old custom PC that is running Windows XP. I bought a Belkin wireless adaptor to connect to wireless internet. Apparently it picks up the wireless signal and even tells me that a connection to the internet is possible (and it connects to my wireless network) and yet when I try to pull up any pages in Internet Explorer (or Firefox, Netscape) I get the error screen. It seems that my computer is receiving packets of data but not sending them out.

When I plug the wireless adaptor into my USB port it informs me that a Hi-Speed device is plugged into a non-highspeed USB port, but it seems like that would just slow it down, not shut it off completely.

Any suggestions with how to proceed with this? I would appreciate anything help!

No reason why it should not work.
The USB speed is irrelevant.
How do you know it connects to your wireless network?
If you use 'Ipconfig /all' do you see an IP and gateway and DNS that make sense ?

I'll try Ipconfig /all when I get home, I have to use the work internet until I get this taken care of.

The wireless adaptor monitor I have (Belkin) tells me that I'm connected to wireless and that the Internet is possible. I click on the connection and click REPAIR and it looks like I have an IP and everything but for some reason the Internet just does not work. This is tricky, I've had people come over and look at it and they are all stumped.
