So you must have a wireless modem or router then. Is your PS3 the 60gb version with built in wi-fi? If so, you must be able to set the PS3 up to connect to the wireless router in the settings somewhere. My Wii is wireless and that was a doodle to connect to my wireless router.
If you have the 20gb version you need to buy an ethernet adapter.

No matter how you look at it you need to get a wireless card or ethernet card into your ps3. I don't know the makeup of the ps3 system but if the 60gb system has built in wifi, that means the 20gb system can have one installed either by you or technician. Once that is done you can still hijack :D the unsecure wifi your currently using to get your computer online with.
To sum it all up, you need a card in your ps3 whether its a wireless or wired type card you need one in there inorder for you to get your ps3 to get online.
EDIT: Ok I just looked online apparently all ps3's come with a built in ethernet card. The 60gb ps3 is the only console that supports wireless connectivity. So if you have anything but the 60gb ps3 it looks like your going to have to spring for the cash and get your own internet connection, so that you can setup a wireless router so you can surf the internet on your laptop wirelessly or wired whichever your pleasure and connect your ps3 to the router (wired).

what I have seen before was on two desktops. They did not have a router, but they had an extra nic card. So they installed it into one computer so that computer had two nics in it. The second machine had one in it. They took the incoming cat5 cable and plugged it into the machine with two nics in it, then they took a second cat5 and plugged it into the second nic on the 1st machine and then connected it to the second computers nic card.
Both computers were then able to connect to the internet. I dont really know what this type of networking would be called, but they kinda used the machine with 2 nics in it as a gateway of some sort.
If you have a laptop chances are you dont have two nics or even have the option to put in an additional nic.
