Please help!!! How can I obtain an internet connection with my wireless laptop when I rent a room from someone who has a desktop computer connected via a cable DSL? modem provided through charter communications in southern california??? TV is also via cable. I have my own email account/IP address. Do I need to network through her computer or can I simply attach a wireless router from the cable in my room??? Please advise as school starts soon. Thank you.

This one might be a little "gray" depending on whether your arrangement includes all or some utilities. If the arrangement is setup with separate addresses/utilities, then it may be against the ISP's AUP or possibly against the law in some jurisdictions.

If there are no AUP/legal issues, then either approach that you brought up can/will work.

vikvik - Your best bet is to buy a wireless router. You will need to attached it in between your house mates DSL modem and your house mates computer appropriately. Follow the directions with the wireless router. I prefer the linksys WRT54G, it's a good all around 54Mbs router that works well. Enable the WEP or WPA security so your not possibly sharing your connection to the internet with everyone within range and possibly everything on your router that is shared. Files, printers, etc...
