software works on LAN but not on WAN

We have been running a software package that using TCP/IP to connect from the PC to the UNIX server for executing a program on a LAN. We not have the same software running on the PC but it is going through a WAN. We are dropping the port connection when the software first connects and downloads a report. Does not happens on a LAN in our building.

I am in the dark on this one.. so any suggestion would be helpful.

If the WAN connects thru a router (most likely) then the ports needed to connect may be blocked (it may be more than one port).
