Hi all,
I'm not a computer newbie but definitely a home networking newbie;)
Here's my situation. I have a desktop running Win XP Pro and a notebook running Win 2000 Pro. I am attempting to share the printer which is connected to my desktop as well as a few files.
So far I have done the following:
1. Both computers have the same workgroup name.
2. File and Print sharing are enabled on both.
3. Both are running Norton Internet Security and I have added the ip addresses of both pcs to NIS "trusted" zones.
4. I have disabled the Win XP firewall.
5. In each of the network connection dialogue boxes, in addition to File and Print sharing, TCP/IP and Client for MS Networks are appearing.

Neither computer can see the other. Also when I ping the desktop using 127.0.0.1 it sends and receives 4 packets, but on the notebook it won't work.

From here, I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Thx in advance.

NIS has a reputation for causing LAN communication problems. It is best to disable it until communications are working. Some recommend uninstalling it and deleting it - but that seems a little extreme. But keep it off.

Lack of a response on 127.0.0.1 is not good. Typical of a bad NIC, or driver or TCP/IP corrupt. Check for latest driver first.

I don't have W2k but I have seen it said you need the same user ID and password on both PCs to share files with W2K. Not a problem to access XP.
