Hello, i'm very new to trying to network computers. Here's the deal, i was given a 5-port mini hub. it has an uplink/normal switch on the back. my main computer is running XP Home, the other is 98SE. main comp has external DSL modem and builtin ethernet adapter. second computer has realtec ethernet card. i have done loads of reading, and i think i can get the network up and running if somebody can te me EXACTLY how to run the CABLES! i've tried different combinations at the back of the hub. still cant get the comps to talk to each other. i really dont need the second comp to have internet, but if it does, ok. any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Tater

Not sure about that switch - would expect it only applies to one of the ports. Don't use the uplink port.

DSL modem -> XP PC -> Switch -> 98SE PC. Use ethernet patch cables (not reversed).
That give the XP PC inernet, but not the 98PC. The XP and 98PC are connected to share files, resources etc.

When you use the hub all you are doing is sharing the ISP connection, not linking them together.
You will need some software, such as PC anywhere to see one another.

Good Luck,
