How to ad hoc?

I would like to know how to configure two XP Centrino notebooks to connect wirelessly to each other in the same room. Is this possible without messing up wireless settings for a connecting to a local wireless network? Is ad hoc secure? If I set up an ad hoc connection, is there any security risk when connecting back to a wireless LAN?

The max level of security for Ad-Hoc would be indicated in the Until/Driver. In many cards the AD-Hoc security might be WEP only (depending on the card).

Switching from Ad-Hoc to regular Wireless might need reconfiguration, so while reconfiguring you can take care of security.

P.S. Given the deals on Wireless Routers (sales for less than $30) it does not worth the hassle to AD-Hoc.
