Hi,

A colleague has installed a DLink DGL 4300 wireless gaming router (it was a give-away) in our office without security. It has a very strong signal and must be accessible to hundreds of other people in the area. Worse, the office files are vulnerable to unauthorized access (?). Of course, everyone is happy to move around the office freely with their machines now but the boss is unaware of the risks.

After successfully installing my own home wireless LAN I thought I might be able to do the same with this router but its security setup is much more complex. I used the wizard and that seemed to go okay but then nobody could log on with the password I defined and I was howled out of the place. Can anyone suggest how I might have gone wrong with the security wizard? I have to get it right if I try again otherwise I may not be allowed to try again.

I would...

Immediately disconnect the device then seek permission from the office manager and IT staff to see if this is authorized... My guess it will not be...

I second Al's motion, disconnect until you figure out how to protect the connection.

In order to work correctly the Wireless Security has to be configured to fit the least secured computer. I.e. if one computer is only capable of WEP level security all the other computers and the Router would need to be configured to WEP level.

The only way an office Wireless can even be considered is with WPA2 level of security (RADIUS Authentication is better). It might be that a lot of the computers that are used in the office are relatively old and do not support WPA2. So it is possible that there is No Wireless solution to fit your offive as is.

May be this can help to clarify.
