I have just installed a DLINK DI 614 wireless router. I connected my ADSL modem to the WAN port on the router and connected my main computer (desktop notebook:)) to one of the LAN ports on the router. My other notebook has a DLINK DWL-G132 Wireless adapter. It's usually about 10 metres away from the router and picks up a good signal.

Both machines are fairly new and running XP.
Both machines have been set up with the Windows Home Network Wizard. I wasn’t exactly sure if I made the right selection at: This computer connects directly/ This computer connects through a residential gateway. I tried both to no avail.
Both have sharing enabled.
Both have WEP security.
Both machines can access the Internet but they can't see each other and only the one directly connected to the printer by USB cable (the main computer) is able to use the printer.
Both machines have the printer drivers installed.
I think I turned “broadcast” off during set-up if that makes any difference. How can I check its status now?

Looking in Control Panels/Printers on my main computer I see that the icons indicate networked status. But I can’t detect the printer from the wireless-connected computer nor see the main computer in the Workgroup.

It’s a pity to be unable to go the whole way and benefit from sharing but I thought someone here might have a useful suggestion.

Have you looked at this?

Also make sure the XP SP2 Windows Firewall is configured to allow File & Print Sharing on the desktop...

Hi,

Thanks for replying. I actually followed your suggestions before I read them by following some other threads. The problem is that other problems never seem quite the same.

Anyway, I discovered that turning off the firewall on both machines prior to running the home-network wizard cured almost all the problems. I am now able to "see" each computer from the other. I am able to read the shared documents on the wirelessly connected machine. From the wirelessly connected machine I am now able to print and share documents. But I am still unable to see the documents in the shared folder of the main machine (it's adjacent (and wired) to the router) while using the wirelessly connected one. I get a message saying I don't have "access privileges " or words to that effect. I feel I'm just one step away from success now. Can anyone see what it is that I have to do to correct this one?
