Hi all,

I have, after 6 weeks of complete incompetence on behalf of my ISP, been assigned a static IP address. The purpose of this was to enable me to access a couple of machines at home connected to a wireless router while I work away for the next 6 months.

My ISP have supplied me with no real configuration advice other than to reboot the router so as to pick up the now assigned static IP. This has worked fine and I have VPN passthrough options enabled on the router (Linksys V2 WAG54G). I believe that VPN is possible as an endpoint on this router

I'm afraid I know nothing else about how to investigate why I cannot connect! I create a new connection on my laptop, name it and specify my public IP and then connect with username/password.

Is this a correct procedure? I would appreciate any small crumbs of advice as I cannot go back to my ISP for any further humiliation. It really would be harmful to my self-esteem, and anyway, I have a small child to feed.

Beyond issuing an IP they are unable to help anyway, or so they say.

If some general advice about where to even begin to find out what to do next I would appreciate greatly

Beyond that you might be interested in using either OpenVPN or Secure Shell (SSH) as alternatives.

Both are quite easy to setup IMO. You would need to run the OpenVPN or SSH server software on a PC behind your router and open the appropriate port on the router to forward incoming traffic to the server PC. Personally I use OpenVPN to access my home LAN and XP Pro desktops...

Good luck...
