I want to connect to my network from outside of my home. But for now trying to assess the situation internally. Connecting with laptop on network (wireless) to XP Pro desktop on network (wired) through RDC, or at least trying.

I have a XP Pro computer with RDC available, remote users turned on, users assigned, port 3389 opened on a linksys wireless router with the correct ip address accessing the application. I can see shared files on each computer, I can ping each computer.

I verified workgroup names are all the same. I verified computer name trying to connect to.

When clicking in drop down in RDC, Browse for more, click on the plus sign next to my workgroup, says "...domain/workgroup does not contain any Terminal Servers".

I was told the theory was that you can connect from inside your own network by connecting to the computer name rather than the external ip.

Is there anything I can check? I went through the checklist and other resources for networking. I am not sure it is the network but at this point the actual software, but it involves setting up a network connection. So any help at this point would be appreciated.

I must admit I have never tried the browse function in RDC. I just type in the name of the PC. However when I tried the browse function I got the same response as you, even tho I was currently on RDC to another PC in the network. So ignore the browse and just enter the PC name (or IP address).

Even typing in the computer name, all uppercase as it shows, even tried sentence case, lower case, no luck.

Looked on MS web site for answers and all I get it how to set it up. Been following those but nothing about troubleshooting that does much more than give you the generic error message again.

The Remote Desktop browse function only works in domain environments. If your in a work group environment, like most home users including myself, you can apply a registry hack to allow this...
