Hi,

I have recently installed a new desktop on my table, with the laptop right beside it.

I installed a Linksys WMP54GS PCI card in the desktop. Using the normal windows configuration, I was shocked to find that the speed was at a low 1 ~ 5.5 Mbps. Moreover the link quality was only at 40%. Initially, I thought that the drivers were the problem. However, upon reinstalling the drivers and the Linksys “Wireless Network Monitor”, it was still the same.

The amazing thing is

1) The PCI card I had installed worked fine in another desktop situated in another part of the house(although this is an unfair comparison since the other desktop was situated closer to the wireless router.
2) I placed my laptop with Centrino next to the desktop and the signal strength was “Very Good” with a speed of 48 Mbps.

I am totally bewildered. i.e. when using firefox with fasterfox, the same webpage that takes 0.12s to load on the laptop, takes 11s to load on the desktop!

For additional information, I am running a Linksys WRT54GS router. Both my laptop and desktop are running Windows XP. The other computers in the household have absolutely no problems with the wireless connection.

Is it important to note that my desktop is placed next to a wooden cupboard with the wall behind it? However, even if I shift the CPU out and let the antenna have more space, the connection is equally poor.

Also, there is no problem with the configuration settings, i.e. the wireless security etc, since the desktop can surf at an acceptable speed and is able to transfer files to and fro with other desktops.

Finally, I need to purchase another wireless peripheral for another desktop. Is an internal card better or an external one?

Thanks!

If all computers on the network can reach each other, then it is probably an antenna/signal performance related issue. If the unit in question has a detachable antenna, then that might be something to consider.
