The house is being renovated so we have the opportunity of installing network cables but is this best to suit our future needs which are:
1) to link 3 or 4 PC’s in the house and outbuilding.
2) to limit access to the internet from the kid’s PC’s.
3) to maintain security.
We are currently using Windows XP and have broadband via a landline.

In addition what about HiFi wiring. Is the future wireless here as well for both music / radio from either a PC or the HiFi unit.

IMO - Cable it with cat5e where feasible to run cables, both PCs and especially Hi-Fi.

Actually you can get Cat6 For cheap off ebay, and lots of it. they're both rated for the same speed, but cat6 is better at eliminating crosstalk, which is good over distance wiring.

I do agree with the wiring the house tho. You'll get much better transfer speeds, security, and you wont have to worry about wireless signals dropping.

Thanks to you both, thought the answer would be wifi so I need to a lot more research about how to set it up and who to get to do it. Would welcome anymore views that are out there.

WiFi is only to supplement the inability to have a physical copper connection in most implementations. The copper wire will win in most situations, with the exception in easy of mobility.
