Ok, i know this is similar (almost identical) to problems i've seen (Xartni's "Help, wireless works, internet does not" (http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?t=4717), but i followed that thread through, but to no avail.
I have a WUSB54GS v.2 wireless access point and a WRT54GS v.4 router (they came as a package deal). At first, i couldnt get the stupid thing to work at all. That was fine, I was taking win2k off anyway. I installed XP (Clean install. I formatted first) and followed the instructions. Pushed the buttons. No go. So, after trying all of the things in Xartni's post, i called tech support. He guided me through UNINSTALLING the provided utilities (Which, by the way, the package had large orange stickers saying "attention!!!! insert CD before connecting cables!!). This fixed the problem for about 5 minutes (long enough for me to get off of the phone and download Firefox). Then, for no reason, it just drops the internet. I'm still connected to the router, but i cant see my other machine, no internet, etc. Well, i changed the channel on the router, and that worked for about 2 minutes, then i (following more knowledge base articles on the linksys site) assigned a static ip. That worked for about 3 minutes.
I have tried the "ipconfig /release" "ipconfig /renew" and get the same error as windows when i try to 'repair' a connection: "Unable to access DHCP server. Please contact your administrator."
I have tried it with and without WEP active, i have tried different ips and everything. I am at a loss. If anyone knows what would cause it to work for a minute, then quit, please let me know.

It's an AMD 2ghz 64bit 'hammer' processor - northbridge rev C0, 1gig ram, onboard usb...Fresh install of WinXP.

Help.

Please

The router and wireless card should be in their default settings first. You can achieve that by a hard reset on the router, and uninstalling the card driver and then reboot. You don't need anything else from the CD. You do need XP SP2. If you do not have SP2 you can download it or get it on CD from Microsoft.

THanks for the reply Greenstead.

Ok, so SP2 works. Except that it keeps dropping the signal. It's got 'excelent' signal strength, but it still disconnects. Sometimes, even though it shows the network to be disconnected, it acctually is (internet works, lan works, etc). This is the only network device on here (besides the windows 1394 device). Dunno.

I dislike putting SP2 on the machine, because it apparently (based on reports from other users of the same software) interferes with some of the programs that i use (mostly audio programs). Since i just brought this machine back up, i havent had a chance to test them yet.

Yes, everything is back at their default settings except A) I renamed the Router, B) i enabled WEP, and C)I changed the administrative password.

I havent figured out why it keeps disconnecting yet, but any thoughts are appreciated.
