I have a Linksys wireless card and a Belkin54G router. Running XP. Problem one is when I connect, I get the computer icon with the X and it says I am not connected, but I really am. That would be all fine and good, but problem two is the connection only lasts for a few minutes, maybe 5 at the most.

I have played around and found this also. When I do get booted and get the nasty X (not connected icon) I go ahead and click connect again (then I am connected, have internet, although the wireless connection status says I am not connected, then I right click, change firewall settings, take the firewall on or off (I have tried both and the result is the same) and bam, like magic the ugly X goes away and my status suddenly shows connected. This time all looks good, but then the connection suddenly dies again, however with this forumla I get to stay connected for 10-15 minutes. I just dont get it. I just moved into my parents home and have had this problem ever since.

When I was in a different apartment with the same computer, same wireless card but a Linksys router, I never had this problem. Any help or suggestions would be so appreciated, I have searched everywhere.

Hi Rosie911,
I can't help with your problem but I can say I get the same one myself. I am getting really fed up with it as sometimes it allows me thru to the web but other times it doesn't.

I've posted the question on other sites so if I get an answer I will let you know. Please do the same if you do too.

You have not said what type of connection you have, Dail up,DSL,cable, etc.

I would go back to a Linksys as it appears the problem maybe with your router.

THE set up should be,
modem
router
PC

Inital set up should be
PC
the router
the modem

Good Luck

Update to XP SP2 and I think the problem may go away.

Sorry Oldtimer, I have Sprint DSL. I used the same NIC card and Sprint DSL in my apartment and had no problems, I moved back in with my folks and they use a Belkin router/ Sprint DSL and that is when the trouble started. The only thing that has ever changed is the router from Linksys to Belkin. I will try the XP SP2 update and post results. Thanks guys/gals for your input.

Almost exact same problem here. What I changed was I installed a PCI par/serial card, which I have disabled. Computer was fine previously, now the internet connection acts like a nine minute egg timer.

This is Win XP SP2, old computer with Win 98 is solid and doesn't lose internet connection.

I set all the IP and DNS addresses manually per a response on the famous closed thread. The catch-all thread helped me before, I just need that similar fix for a lost ? whatever. I know it will be the last thing I try.
