I just got registered with Videotron (a local internet, TV Cable, and telephone provider, all by cable). But presentely I get my internet High Speed and telephone from Sympatico/Bell, via telephone cable.
My concerns are as follows:
1. Will it be relatively easy to use a router with the modem they'll install?
I have set networks in the past using regular routers, and modem/routers (Linksys), without much hassle.
And a Videotron representative just told me that their modem "is NOT wireless"
: ( and that if I want to use wireless connections I have to do that on my own. Now, do you think my Speedstream 6300 modem/router (from Sympatico) can be used for this? I mean, after all, it is a wireless router too. Or do you think I'd need a regular type of router?
I believe this Sympatico modem/router has a chip limiting its use to Sympatico networks, isn't it? And if so, is it possible to disable this? How? Is it worth the hassle (if any)?

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks in advance guys : )

This is kind of beyond the scope of what gets covered across these forums. Here's some points which may cover your situation...

1. Combination DSL/Routers are typically not compatible with cable modem configurations as its input is typically a DSL connection via a RJ-11 jack, not the ethernet connection that comes out of most cable modems as RJ-45 jacks

2. Most wireless routers can be wired and configured to work like wireless access points, but the configuration is typically not supported by the manufacturer as it is not being used as designed/marketed

Do you know if the Speedstream 6300 can be used as a router only with Videotron cable modem? If yes, how do I disable the modem part on the Speedstream? Thanks.

Based on the spec sheet - http://www.at2.com/downloads/documents/efficient/SpeedStream%206300%20DSL%20Wireless%20Gateway%20Da ta%20Sheet.pdf. This looks like a very nice piece of equipment.

Ultimately, you need to either refer to:

1. The equipment manual
2. ISP that provided the equipment

If the manual does not get you anywhere, then you might need to contact the ISP, if they have locked the unit up in any way.
