I'm starting to believe the cable company is either blocking my router's MAC address or that the router itself just fizzled and died. Here's the scoop:

Total open network. (No WEP)
Cable modem works fine connected directly to either of my machine's ethernet.
Microsoft 802.11b (yes ancient) Router has worked flawlessly for 3 years with no settings changed whatsoever.

Both laptops were connected fine up until last night. We made no changes whatsoever. During some heavy downloading where both laptops were requesting large amounts of data, the the internet just went away. It still hasn't come back either. Excellent 802.11b connectivity, but zero throughput to the internet itself by any means off of the wireless router.

I can get enough connectivity to "sometimes" resolve a domain name, but never long enough to actually connect and download the entire page. (Unless of course I connect directly to the cable modem instead then it's full speed ahead... but the basement's not too cozy a home office. ;) ).

So, what could possibly cause spontaneous internet death. It's definately in the wireless router in some way/shape/form. What might be suggested solutions to try?

It may be worth trying a hard reset on the router to clear it down. Then reconfigure it.
