Okay, I'm not afraid (but maybe a little embarrased) to admit that I am clueless when it comes to doing much more than surfing and typing as far as computers go.
But Verizon had me convinced that even I could install their DSL and set up a network between my son's computer and my own. So I took the bait.
We installed a Westall (sp) modem/router on my son's computer (much newer) which has Windows XP. I managed to install it and it seemed to run fine.
Four days later, my Linksys USB adapter came in the mail for my computer which has Windows 98SE. I installed the software, installed the adapter and it seemed to work fine. Okay, now what. I tried to get online and it still wanted to dial up, and now that wouldn't work either.
After knowing I had reached my limit, I called their tech support and got someone who sounded like he'd been rudely awaked from his afternoon nap. He asked me a bunch of questions that didn't even sound like he was referring to the same equipment I had. Then he had me go to my son's computer and start typing in an IP address. It kept asking me for a user name and password and it wouldn't take it. After 40 minutes, I had to stop to go out.
When I tried later to get on my son's computer to go online, it would no longer connect. Another 30 minutes with their tech support and they were no help.
I realize it's stupid question, but once you set up the modem/router and then install the adapter on the second computer, what are the steps to make sure the second one is receiving a signal? Do we need to change setting on the main computer? And do I have to install the same software from the DSL CD onto the second one too? Any help would be appreciated. I mean ANY help at all. My son is now saying we should uninstall everything and start over.
Thanks.
