I've installed the USB device on my XP Pro SP2 system and had an install problem. It crashed, called Belkin, and they had me d/l the latest driver from thier website. Utility worked just fine. I later decided to use a PCI card however and removed the device from that system.

Two days ago, I added the USB device to another computer, one running XP Home SP2. Here I had a different problem. The configuration Utility just starts, puts its name up on the taskbar, never opens to the desktop, and closes and then restarts. The pattern, start, try to open, fail, close, repeats endlessly. EVENTVIEWER shows an error that it can't close due to a missing file, but no info on the missing file.

OK, Belkin phone support has me use the Windows Wireless control instead. They can't tell what is wrong and blame it on the installation (OS, call manufacturer of the computer). They get me to use the Windows Wireless app instead. I use a passphrase for WEP and the Windows app doesn't allow it. I had to get KEY1 off the router to allow me to connect. No problem, device works. However, randomly, the connection drops and reconnects. The connection icon usually show the speed and signal strenght as 54.0 MBPS and Excellent however, but occasionally it drops to a lower connect speed.

Is Windows doing something I don't know about, like trying to reconnect? The lease for the IP address seems to be renewed when this happens? My other computer doesn't have this problem of dropping the conenct, and it is on at the same time using the Belkin Wireless PCI card.

Suggestions? What should I look for? Anyone else have a problem like this? Belkin washed thier hands on this one.

This machine is a Sony Vaio RX650, over 3 years old. It doesn't seem to 'like' wireless cards either? I've tried 2, a NETGEAR WG311V2 wich worked as far as a connection goes, but severly retarded the system. Something appeared to be running and sometimes the mouse crawled and disk access was super slow. Had to take that out and use the USB one. It works fine, other than the inability to use the Belkin Utility and occasional drop/reconnects....

OK, I have some answers, I think?

1) It appears that Windows Wireless Zero Connection Service detects the speed change. This in turn causes it to search for a new connection, as it disables the one it has. Since I only have one available, it connects again. This is done automatically every 3 minutes it seems. See URL http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1566989,00.asp

2) There appears to be 2 versions of the USB device. One is listed as V2 on the Belkin driver site, http://www.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp?category=9&lang=1&mode=.
I tried installing both. My device is a F5D7050. If you actually get the link to d/l the V2 driver, it has UK at the end. However, the F5D7050.exe, although it installs ok on the WinXP Home SP2 system, the utility NEVER starts. Deleted it and then tried the F5D7050_V2_UK.EXE file (URL http://www.belkin.com/support/download/downloaddetails.asp?download=1574&lang=1). Not only does it install OK, it WORKS fine. No need to use Windows to manage the USB wireless device and no more annoying dropouts.

I assume the 'version 2000' sticker on the box means V2?
