I have a wired router, belkin, that I want to add an access point to. I'm kind of, no strike that, very stupid on the ins and outs of wireless. I am adding a laptop with built in wireless a,b,g, that I would like to be able to access the internet wireless. Can I just purchase an access point linked by cable to the belkin?
What access point, if this would work, would you recommend for portability, speed and reliability? If this is covered in a FAQ or another thread maybe you could point me in the right direction.
Thanks

You are on the right track. There are too many choices at any given time. Try the main www.practicallynetworked.com site as a starting point. There are reviews there, a lot of them dated, but it should lead you to some shopping decisions.
There is one other possible option to consider... You can also replace the existing wired router with a wireless model. That may actually cost less these days as wireless routers are typically less expensive than the wireless access points.

Technology wise the solution is to buy an Access Point, plug it to the open port on the Router, set it up and done.
However Access Points are more expensive than Cable/DSL Routers.
So you might want to buy a New Wireless Cable/DSL Router to replace your current Router. Or you can configure the Wireless Router as a switch with an Access Point and plug it into the Netgear.

Thanks so much for the quick replys and links. You are prob correct on just getting a wireless router to replace the belkin. Just wonder how often it will come into play for using an AP on the road where a hotel just has wired internet.
Thanks again.
