I need advice on how to make my p2p wireless network working.

I have two PCs running XP with SP2. Both have build-in ethernet. I installed one machine with a D-Link wireless desktop card, the other with a D-Link wireless usb key (both of the B flavor). And I setup both to use the same SSID.

Drivers/Utilities got installed without any problem. I've configured both PC to use channel 6, ad-hoc mode, disabled authentication, using static IP 192.178.0.x (also tried ICS). Both machine have "Client for Microsoft Network", TCP/IP, "File and Printer Sharing for MS Network" protocols installed/enabled. I also set up a workgroup on both PCs with the same name.

The PCs can see each other, I know because if I change SSID to be different on two machines, both machine say they detected two wireless networks in the area. Signal strength is good (the two PCs are only a few feet away)

However, here's my problem: the two PC's still can not communicate with each other! I tried to ping with name, ip address and got no response at all. I checked and made sure Windows "Network Brower" service is up and running on both machines.

I also tried installing NETBEUI on both machines, it did not work either.

Tried to use Windows to configure the wireless network instead of D-Link utility, didn't work either.

Windows filewalls are disabled for wireless network.

I would greatly appreciate any help/advice.

Thanks a ton.

eh, make sure your setup is correct

hm if you have a cable modem , which im not sure if you do from the post , run a cat5 from the cable modem into your ACCESS POINT computer, then restart everything and it should work saying you are using windows XP it should set it up for you.

Thanks for the reply.

Still need help on the subject.

I do not have any internet connection other than a dial-up service. So no Cable/DSL modem, no routers either. The M/B built-in ethernet is not used.

My question is: what set-ups could possibly causing this problem?

Very odd , if you can see both of them on a work group it should be working. since no routers and over a 56k modem, AOL is what im assuming you are using over the network. As far as troubleshooting the problem:

1) Make sure correct IP is being Pinged
2) Attempt to ping the IP of the comp. you are on to test the NIC.
3) Attempt to ping www.google.com on Both

That will troubleshoot the nic if the first 2 work then its not the nic..

its very odd that you are able to see it in workgroup but not connect to it through ping. are you as well not able to view the files, if this is so you do not have it setup on one of the computers to be Open.

AIM me at visualtalent32 because im not sure if this post helped you and would be easier if we could actually talk and troubleshoot.
