I am confused as to which wires to use, whether I should be using cross over or straight-through wires for both or either of the red or blue parts of how I am trying to wire up my network.

See image:

The plate between the red and blue:

And also does anyone know the purpose of these:

Do I need these for the faceplate?

Howya,

I couldn't open that first gif so I'm not sure what you mean. But if your linking two PCs directly together via their Net Cards then you need a crossover cable. And if you'r connecting throungh a router/switch then a straight through connection will do.

If your buying the faceplate already made up with the jacks installed then you don't need the 3rd link thing (keystone jack).

By the picture on the second link it looks like the jacks are installed in the faceplate, but £2.20 seems very cheap(or maybe I'm being ripped off!).

Hope this helps

hmm the image is back up, some people are telling me

straight through (red line) > plate > crossover (blue)

EDIT: lol, typical, my host has gone offline again, but it'll be back up soon  :p

Here is the image, as the host is playing around.

Straight-throughs as long as the face plate does not change any of the pin-outs in any way. With a lot of the newer networking gear (e.g. SOHO routers), it doesn't even matter as they will auto-detect the wiring.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll let you know when I have it set up.
