I changed over from a wired Lan to wireless. I had problems with the Netgear WG311v2 card (Dell XPS Gen 3 with Windows XP Pro SP2) in that it would produce a BLUE SCREEN at shutdown. Router is a Netgear WGR614v5. With this configuration, I didn't really notice a delay in network connected when booting vs. what the hardwired Lan did? Since the PCI card was a problem (I have 2 that do the same thing at Shutdown) I tried another manufacturers G speed PCI card. This is a Belkin F5D7000. Card does not have a problem working or shutting down the system. However, I seem to make the initial connection 'late'. By that I mean my programs I start that use the internet (weather check, spam/e-mail check, etc.) can't connect on the first attempt?
Even the Belkin app will crash sometimes at startup? To stop this, I deleted the link from my STARTUP folder. All seems to work the same with or without the the application running? I think it is for status and changing some settings, and has nothing to do with making the connection.
I have the Windows Network Connection Icon on the lower right of the taskbar, and that usually shows 'aquiring network address'. Sometimes it will complain that the network connection is not complete even. However, within a minute, the connection is made and this disappears. Othertimes it seems to be OK, but just slow to get the address? Windows IS NOT managing the connection, only the device driver seems to make it happen.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to speed up this initial connection? Anyone else see this happen? Once the connection is completed, I have full 54 MBPS speed?
Also, in the REGISTRY, this is now NETWORK CONNECTION 8? Netgear had me uninstall/install the cards a few times and each time a new Registry entry was created it seems. I also have a USB G device I tried. Can the unused entries be deleted? Is Windows trying to load the first 7 and this is causing the delay? If I put the Cat 5 cable back in, alter the network setup and re-boot, Lan connection is there immediately (under NETWORK CONNECT 1). Suggestions?
