I recently decided to network my two computers together. One is running Windows XP (home), the other is running 98. To do this, I bought a HPNA (HPRO200) router and (HP200) NIC from Linksys.

I ran a cable from my cable modem to the wan port on the back of the router, and from the lan port I ran another to the ethernet card in my Win XP computer. I used one of the phone jacks on the router to connect to the wall, and from an outlet in the other room I used a second phone cord to connect to the NIC in the 98 computer.

Once the hardware was connected, I got onto the XP computer and ran the network wizard. I selected other, then "This computer connects to the internet directly or through a network hub.", set up the names and everything and finished. On the 98 computer, I ran the XP wizard from the CD and selected the same options.

Here is my problem. Both computers can access the internet, which was my biggest concern, but they are unable to share files or printers. When I attempt to access the 98 computer from the XP, I get an error after a moment stating "98 is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." When I attempt to access the XP from the 98, I get no error bue whenever I open Network Neighborhood I get the animation that it is looking for a file or something.

I'm pretty sure this is because I've overlooked something stupid, but this is my first attempt at setting up a network so I almost expected that. Any ideas or suggestions you could offer would be greatly appriciated.

Sounds like you are close to verything working.

The networking wizard does not always seem to get the job done. If it created any network bridges delete them.

Heres a checklist to run thro to enable PCs to share resources:

Note : You only need one protocol (NetBT = Netbios over TCP/IP)
- All PCs have TCP/IP installed.
- All PCs have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled.
- All PCs have the same workgroup.
- All PCs have a unique computer name.
- ALL PCs have network shares defined directly under c:.
- ALL NICS are on the same subnet (typically IP 192.168.1.* subnet 255.255.255.0).
- MS Client and file & printer sharing are checked on each NIC.
- All NICs have their node type = anything except peer-peer (check with Ipconfig /all, or winipcfg on 95 or 98).
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled.
- All 3rd party firewalls are disabled (until connection is working).

Even with this there can be some additional problems to solve.
