ad hoc and internet

i have dial up. a laptop and a desktop. both run xp home, both have 802.11 b/g network cards. the desktop accesses the internet just fine. ad hoc seems the way to network them but can the laptop go on line using the desktops connection? both dont need to go on line at the same time. any ideas?

i read through it a few times before but always with a cool one in my hand. it always befuddles me then.
