I am trying to help a friend set up a wireless network between 2 machines both of which run Windows XP.

On the main machine there is a Netcomm 5580W ADSL modem/gateway/router. This machine can access the internet OK.

The other machine has an old motherboard that does not accept PCI 2.1 or greater cards so there is a LAN NIC connected to a Belkin 54g router set to be an access point.

I have set the SSID the same, switched off security but cannot ping between the two.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do, assuming it can be done.

If you connect an Access Point (AP) to a computer and want it to act as a client it has to be an AP that can be configured as a client, most Wireless Cable/DSL Router can not be configured as a Client.

May be this can Help: Link to: Wireless Network - Configuration Modes. (http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html)

Thanks Jack. That is the conclusion I came to after trying a number of combinations.

It seems that wireless bridging is proprietry. I successfully connected 2 Belkin ADSL gateway routers.

I was configured the Belkin ADSL gateway router as a normal wirless client, according to the setup page, but couls not communicate with a Netcomm or DLink gateway/router.

The only solution is to update the motherboard to accept a 2.1 or greater wireless network card or to use a USB wireless connection.
