I'll try to explain this clearly...

My neighbor got a new Dell PC (XP Home SP2 - With Mcafee internet protection stuff). He replaced his old Win98 machine using the same network line which worked fine.

The machine is set to DHCP with the Intel 10/100 NIC set to Auto. He receives an internal IP from the router properly. He can also EVENTUALLY ping out (though not always) to www.google.com (and others). Whenever he tries to go to a site, it acts like it times out and never gets there. When he tries to go to the router's config page it is VERY slow. I shut off the McAffe firewall and XP's firewall with no effect.

Now - when he bypasses the router and directly uses his cable modem everything works fine - he gets an external IP and can surf at full speeds.

So, my thought is that it must be the router - an older 4 port wired SMS Barricade. I lent him a wired Linksys 4 port router I had lying around - STILL does NOT work.

That's two routers - can they both be 'bad'? Do I need to do something like set the NIC manually to 100 Full duplex?

Thanks for any help...I feel my neighborhood 'geek' status is at stake here...;)
