Short intro:
3COM nic fixed at 100mb/Full Duplex, W2K. Used T568A wiring standard, on CAT5 cable.

System next to hub (10/100) running fine.
Put system in livingroom - slow.
Loading, fex a photo on system close to server, [flash] Done.
Loading same photo on Living system - takes ages.

Can someone please point me in the right direction: how to troubleshoot an IP connection? I'm sure it's either a setting on the NIC (there's loads of them - none seem to make a difference or just disconnect :o )

It must be a setting somewhere.... I'm kindo lost.
Tips, hints, suggestions more then welcome.

Thanks a lot for even taking the time to read this :) responses MUCH appreciated.

"3COM nic fixed at 100mb/Full Duplex"

Fixed as in you cannot change it?

I had a VERY similar problem but dropping the card to 10 instead of 100 fixed the issue. If you can, take the NIC's properties off of "auto sense" and set it at 10baseT or 10baseT full duplex. I have asked several networking professionals from work and they had no explanation why it works but indeed it does.

Reason it does not work is because the switches do not auto sense correctly. We see this on Cisco gear all the time. We manually set the cisco to 100/full then set the client to 100/full if we set the client without setting the switch (client is 100/full and the switch is auto then we get all kinds of slowdowns) and vice versa.

here is an excellent article on the subject:

Hope this sheds some lite.
